Lent, or a way to diet

My husband is Catholic. My family is also Catholic, but I was never baptized and rarely went to church when I was younger. I don't think my mom ever mentioned Lent in any moment of my childhood. For my husband and his mom, Lent is a pre-Easter tradition. For the last few years, my husband has given up sweets for the 40 days before Easter and I have sort of tried. This year he decided to give up all junk food and as all the clothes that fit me at this time last year are now a bit snug, I thought I would join him on his quest of spiritual cleansing.

So, what is considered junk food? Basically anything yummy. No fast food (we consider fast food those that typically have a drive-thru), no sweets (candy, cake, donuts, ice cream, etc), no soda (even diet), nothing  fried, no pizza, no chips.... am I leaving anything out?

On Saturday night, I had some girlies over for dinner and wine and my husband went to his friend's cabin for a sleepover. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't make it a day on this diet, but knowing that he is judging me (my husband, not god) makes it hard for me to cheat. Well, Saturday I was a bit tipsy and was kind of hungry right before bed, so I caved. I had one graham cracker, one marshmallow, and one tiny piece of chocolate. Why was that stuff in the house? Well, I participated in Weddingbee's Valentine swap and someone sent me s'more makings in the most adorable packaging ever.

How amazing do these look from The Nibble?

I haven't cheated since then, even today at our meeting when there were reese's peanut butter cups on the table calling my name, but MAN, dieting makes me hungry! Last night I was bugging my husband sooooo bad because between stomach growls I would whine "I'm huuuuuuunnngryyyyyyyyy." I know I need this little kick in the pants to drop a few pounds for my health, especially if we get pregnant this year, but it is so much more fun to come home and eat chips and candy and drink soda!

My birthday is coming up and I want you to know now that I WILL CHEAT for cake and ice cream.

What was your hardest diet? Did you cheat?

I had tea last night because all I wanted was dessert! It didn't really work, but I can tell my tolerance is building.
