Our Meeting with Emily

LET ME START OFF BY WRITING IN ALL CAPS WHICH I KNOW MAKES IT FEEL LIKE I'M YELLING BUT THAT'S OK BECAUSE I AM AND I'M ALSO WRITING IN RUN-ON SENTENCES BUT WHO CARES BECAUSE EMILY JUST COMMENTED ON MY HALLOWEEN DECORATING POST AND I AM SO HAPPY AND EXCITED AND I CAN DIE NOW EXCEPT NOT YET BECAUSE I WANT TO SEE WHAT SHE DOES TO OUR HOUSE.... breathe...

Emily came over on Saturday. Yeah, we're close like that... ok, well not really, but she did come over. Anyhoo... when she and her new assistant (I think that's who he was) knocked on the door, my husband was asleep on the couch watching "This Old House" and I was FA-REAKING out. I gently woke him - no, actually I very loudly whisper/yelled at him and we greeted her at the door. She immediately gave me a hug and said what a cute house we had. I was starting to feel less nervous and more elated.

After checking out the rooms, she decided that she wanted to re-do our Living/Dining room. While we had originally applied for the Master Bedroom to be made over, she said she really liked the "vibe" of that room already and thought the Living/Dining area would make a much bigger impact. Now that I reflect on it, I am SO happy she made this decision. From our talk that followed, it seems like we're going to get something really amazing at the end of this.

Her assistant measured and drew a floor plan while Emily gave us some books and magazine pages to flip through. If we liked something, we placed a sticky note on the page and wrote what we liked about it. As we flipped, we chatted and she took notes on our space, our wants and needs, and our "style".

A note about style: if you watched Design Star, you know that her original show idea was taking someone's outfit or clothing style and transforming that into their home decor. Well, when she said that, I'm pretty sure she didn't know about "Dress My Nest," a show on the style network that already had that premise. I'm going to guess that HGTV wanted something totally unique, so she tweeked her idea a bit. For her new show Secrets from a Stylist, she does a "style diagnostic" where she figures out what the homeowners love and hate and builds three different looks. Her show has three reveals instead of one because she starts with one aspect of the identified style and decorates the room, shows the homeowners, they say what they like and dislike, then she repeats the process again and again until the third reveal when she gets it just right.

Anyway, as we flipped and tagged pictures of beautiful homes (the above room by Nate Berkus that I used in my Living/Dining room design fantasy post was in one of the magazines), we chatted like old friends. I told her we went to the viewing party for the final episode of Design Star, but that I was too shy to say hello. She said she remembered us there (not sure if she was just saying that or if she really did remember, but it is possible because there weren't that many people there) and talked about the sound problems and how she went all "bridezilla" on the bar manager (yeah right, she's way too nice). We chatted about Nate Berkus and design blogs and Martha Stewart and it was just so awesome. We told her what we'd love to see in the space and she suggested opening up the kitchen to the dining room (HELLO YES), but she said not to get too excited because they're not really supposed to do stuff like that on her show. She spent so much time chatting with us that she was late to her next appointment and that made me feel sort of sorry, but really just so happy.

She left and we jumped up and down for a minute or two, then took our puppies on a walk to the store to get some champagne and dessert. We headed over to Flemings for happy hour - they have an amazing happy hour menu and we can feel fancy without spending the big bucks - and talked about how it all went down and what we hoped she would do to our space. It was a great day and night and made me forget about all the stress we've been dealing with lately

Things I forgot to mention and now regret:

1. I am obsessed with Glee. She is really good friends with the co-creator of the show. We could have totally Gleeked out and maybe she could have hooked me up in some way.

2. I wanted to show her my awesome earring display, but totally forgot. She did notice my color coded bookshelves, though :)

3. I wish I would've told her to check out my blog, if she had the time. I'd really love her advice on the other rooms in our house that she's not styling and she could have looked through my design fantasy posts for more ideas. ~EDIT~ see major freak out at the top of this post... she has now checked out my blog... wow.

*Why does spell check not recognize texted or texting as words?? I think it is about time they're added to the dictionary.
